Welcome! You've come to the right spot for all the latest news from the Wieland Wildcats and Pflugerville ISD.

November 21, 2025

As a part of our after school enrichment program, Mrs. Runkel started a leadership group.  She met with five students each week and discussed what makes a good leader.  They started a Morning Greeting time where the group of students would greet other students and pose a daily question.  They concluded their group with a visit to Springs of Austin Assisted Living Facility.  They met with the residents there and talked with them about their lives.  They also played bingo and made crafts together.  The residents definitely appreciated the visit and hope more Wildcats will come back!

Our first grade classes celebrated their learning by hosting a CVC Cafe! Each student cooked up lots of CVC words, while teachers and parent volunteers cooked up lots of delicious pancakes! Thank you to all the families who came out to help- we appreciate all of our amazing Wieland families!

CVC words, an acronym for Consonant-Vowel-Consonant, are simple three-letter words that are essential for early reading and phonics development, such as "cat," "dog," and "sun". They are easy for beginning readers to decode because the letters represent their most common, short sounds, allowing students to practice segmenting and blending sounds to form words.

CVC words help students develop the ability to recognize and manipulate individual sounds (phonemes) within words, which is a critical skill for reading.

Practicing CVC words helps beginners build confidence and decode words smoothly, bridging the gap between recognizing letter sounds and reading words.

Examples of CVC words

cat: (/k/ /a/ /t/)

bed: (/b/ /e/ /d/)

pig: (/p/ /i/ /g/)

log: (/l/ /o/ /g/)

sun: (/s/ /u/ /n/)

We enjoyed celebrating International Dot Day!  Ms. Maria had so many fun activities in the Library throughout the whole week.

From the Dot Day website: Dot Day is a global celebration of creativity, courage, and collaboration.  It began in 2009 when teacher Terry Shay introduced his classroom to Peter H. Reynolds’ book The Dot.

The Dot is the story of a caring teacher who dares a doubting student to trust in her own abilities by being brave enough to “make her mark”. What begins with a small dot on a piece of paper becomes a breakthrough in confidence and courage, igniting a journey of self-discovery and sharing, which has gone on to inspire countless children and adults around the globe.

Each year on International Dot Day the inspiration continues. What started as a story in the pages of a book is transforming teaching and learning around the world as people of all ages re-discover the power and potential of creativity in all they do.

Wieland had a great turn out at Science Night!  Families were invited to come see science projects and participate in science activities put on by each grade level.  The PreK and Kinder hall had activities for force and motion, including magnet games and a marble run.  The First Grade team hosted a forensic science activity with fingerprint testing.  The Second and Third Grade teams had a create-a-rocket activity as well as a robo-copter bullseye activity.  Fourth Grade created tasty mixtures and Fifth Grade had stations to try out animal adaptations.  Students also had the chance to win bike helmets in a raffle, as well as take home books with science activities to try at home!

Science Fair

This image shows a student telling two judges about his science project.

January 16, 2025

On Thursday, January 16th, Wieland hosted its annual Science Fair.  Students in 4th and 5th grade created science projects and had the opportunity to share them to be judged.  The judges were students from Pflugerville High School who participate in the PALS program.  Wieland students did a great job of describing their procedures and materials, as well as explaining their graphs, results, and conclusions.  Thank you to Ms. Takahashi for organizing the Science Fair and for providing this great opportunity for our students!

Tree Day!

December 11, 2024

Thanks to a great partnership with H-E-B, we now have 60 new trees on campus!!  The H-E-B partners came to Wieland and did a quick welcome and then we got right into planting!!  Our students worked hard to help the volunteers.  Each hole was dug by hand and carefully measured to fit each tree!  3rd, 4th, and 5th grade classes came out to help plant.  We are excited to watch these trees grow alongside our students and can't wait for the shade they'll provide in the years to come!  Thank you, H-E-B!!

Attendance Trophy

This photo shows a student holding a trophy that says Wieland Attendance Winner.

December 9, 2024

Our Campus Climate and Culture Team meets regularly to make school wide decisions about social emotional learning, restorative practices, positive behavior, and attendance.  The team started a new incentive to have monthly Wieland Attendance Awards.  Each month, we review each grade level's student attendance percentage and the winning grade level gets to carry the trophy proudly!  The winning grade level for November was THIRD GRADE!  Each class has a trophy to show off their accomplishment.  We are keeping track of December attendance to see who will get the trophy next!  Thank you to all families for getting your students to school every day and on time!  Daily attendance is so important and we want to see everyone's smiling faces every day!

Character of the Month Breakfast

This photo shows the Character of the Month Breakfast in the cafeteria, honoring each student.

December 5, 2024

Every month, each classroom teacher nominates one student from their class who exemplifies that month's character trait.  Students get their picture hung in the hallway, along with a short note from the teacher explaining why they nominated that student.  A new tradition this year is our Character of the Month Breakfast.  Families of the nominated students are invited to a special ceremony to honor their student.  Each student gets recognized by Ms. Bost and their teacher's message is read aloud.  We are so proud of all of our students!

Bluebonnet Books

This photo shows a hallway display with all of the book covers for the 24-25 Bluebonnet Book List.

December 2, 2024

Each year, the Texas Libraries Association releases their annual Bluebonnet Book List.  This is a list of fiction and nonfiction books that all students in 3rd-6th grades are encouraged to read.  The committee evaluates hundreds of books each year and picks the 20 best to be included on their list!  At Wieland, we encourage all 3rd-5th grade students to read at least 5 of the Bluebonnet Books.  Mr. Stevenson, Ms. Maria, and Mrs. Prentice try to read as many of the books as they can and love talking to the students about them!  Students are encouraged to track their reading through Beanstack, which can be found in their ClassLink profile.  Please click here to view this year's book choices.  Which one do you want to read first?

Board Game Fun!

This photo shows a 2nd grade class learning the rules of a new board game.

November 22, 2024

Through a recent initiative led by our assistant principal, Mrs. Gabbert, classroom teachers now have access to a full shelf of board and card games for their students.  This was an important project for Mrs. Gabbert because she knows the value of meaningful play.  There are so many important life skills learned while playing board games- taking turns, being a graceful winner and loser, teamwork, strategy, conflict management, partner conversation, and more!  We are so excited to have these games for our students to learn from.

Our Garden

This photo shows one bed of the garden at Wieland.

November 19, 2024

Through the diligent work of fourth grade teacher Ms. McGarity, our garden is blossoming again!  Our teachers and students go out regularly to take care of the various plants growing there.  Many students have even tasted broccoli and kale taken right off the plant!  We currently have kale, Swiss chard, broccoli, cauliflower, beans, pumpkins, green onions, tomatoes, arugula, and cabbage!  It is such a wonderful thing for our students to experience the full life cycle from seed to vegetable.  Thank you for your hard work, Ms. McGarity!

Camp Read-A-Thon

This photo shows a large sign hanging in our hallway that says, %22Welcome to Camp Read-A-Thon%22.

November 11, 2024

We are enjoying our two week campus-wide celebration of Literacy called Camp Read-A-Thon!  Students are engaged in both reading and writing activities in their classrooms.  We enjoyed cuddling up with a good book, where students got to wear their pajamas and spend time just reading for enjoyment.  We also had a great Flashlight Friday where all students got a finger flashlight and were given time to enjoy a book with their flashlight.  Thank you to Mrs. Jenny Runkel, our Reading Interventionist, for all of her hard work to make Camp Read-A-Thon possible!!
